Why we design differently for mobile (and it is not just about screen size)
Shrinking a desktop design until it fits a phone screen is not adapting it — it is the same piece, badly thought out for a completely different context. Mobile does not just change the screen size: it changes the reading distance, the interaction gesture, and even how much attention is available at that moment.
Reading distance changes almost everything
A desktop screen is viewed from 50–70 cm away; a phone, from 25–35 cm. That means text that reads perfectly at a moderate size on desktop needs to be proportionally larger on mobile — not because the screen is smaller, but because the eye has less margin before a thin stroke stops resolving clearly at that distance.
The thumb replaces the cursor, and that changes the margin for error
A mouse cursor points with single-pixel precision; a thumb on a touchscreen covers a much wider and less precise area. Interactive elements on mobile need more space between them and a larger touch area than the visual design would suggest — hence almost everything on mobile looks "more spaced out" than its desktop equivalent.
Ambient light is not the same
A phone is used equally in a dimly lit room and in full daylight on the street — the range of light conditions is far greater than for a desktop monitor, almost always used in a stable indoor environment. That demands more generous contrast by default: what looks fine on your computer screen can be invisible in direct sunlight.
Available attention is different, not just shorter
It is not just that people have "less patience" on mobile — it is that phones are often used in fragmented moments: waiting for the lift, in a queue, between tasks. A design that requires several seconds of sustained attention to understand fails in that context, even though that same design would work perfectly on a desktop where attention is more sustained.
